Fergus Falls Boys Basketball (Season Preview)

Friday, November 25, 2016

By Craig Olson - Fergus Falls, MN

As Matt Johnson enters his second year as head coach of the Fergus Falls boys basketball team he does so with four players with starting experience and seven varsity letter winners returning from a team that finished 28-4 in a season that saw them take runner-up honors in the Class 3A State Tournament, losing to DeLasalle in the title game.

Senior guards Elijah Colbeck and Matthew Monke, and juniors Nathan Rund (G) and Harrison Christenson (F) were all starters a year ago, while seniors Spencer Breen (F) and Andrew Christenson (G) and sophoimore Matthew Johnson (SO) also have extensive varsity experience.  Johnson will be looking to senior Mason Davis (F) and juniors Marshall King (G/F), Austin Stanislawski (G) and Max Wolfe (F) to challenge for varsity minutes.

"We return a good bit of experience from last years team," acknowledged Johnson.  "We also return a majority of our scoring.  Our ability to play unselfishly on offense and knock down shots is a strength that we have.  An area to imporove will be to have our players step into the leadership provided by the seniors last year.  They will be missed tremendously, but it will be fun to watch our returners step in to fill the void."

Colbeck, Monke, and Rund will serve as tri-captains.

Johnson will be assisted by Keith Pearson, Jim Salentine, and Dave Rund.

He sees Alexandria and Sauk Rapids-Rice as the top teams in Section 8AAA, with St. Cloud Tech and Rocori leading the way in a tough Central Lakes Conference.
